Challenge: No sugar needed – we’re sweet enough


Sugar, you sweet little monster.

Generally I’m not a huge fan of restrictions when it comes to food in general or certain kinds of food. When you listen to yourself and understand the main ideas of eating healthy (I know, there are divergent definitions of what “healthy”  means in this context) you will learn what is actually good for your body and what kinds of food you don’t necessarily need. And yes, there are some foods like meat or dairy products for example where not everybody has the same opinion on. But there are also some kinds of food, that almost all of us consider not really healthy.

Yes, I’m speaking about sugar. You can’t tell me, that you know many people who would say that sugar is beneficial for you health. Of course I’m not talking about natural occurring fructose which we consume when we’re eating whole fruits. I’m rather talking about refined sugar which we sadly find in almost every convenience product that we can buy in our supermarket.

To be honest: We all know sugar is damaging our body. Not only our teeth but also, especially in the long term, our general health. Nevertheless, sweet temptations are lurking around every corner. And most of the time we just can’t say no. I know, there’s not much which can be as satisfying as a rich chocolate cake. But is it always necessary to it a second or even third piece of it? And also all this added sugar to our coffees? And the hidden sugar in store-bought fruit yogurt or ketchup? Most of us don’t even notice how much sugar we’re consuming every single day.

Here’s the challenge.

As I said before, I don’t promote limitations when it comes to eating, as long as you make conscious decisions. But speaking about sugar, for me it really makes sense to give my body a little break from this stuff. The last time I did this challenge I ate sugar free for even eight weeks and as the time flew by I had no cravings any more at all and I could feel so many other positive changes in my body.

Let’s do this together this time! Keep in mind that this challenge is all about desensitizing your taste buds, keeping your blood sugar levels from high fluctuations and making conscious decisions. I promise that you are going to feel better after you survived the first couple of days :). Take it one day at a time and be proud of every day you managed staying sugar free.

The Checklist:

  • no refined sugar for the next 5 weeks
  • be aware that most convenience products contain lots of sugar
  • replace them with whole, unprocessed foods like grains, potatoes, beans, lentils, vegetables and fruits
  • keep your body hydrated
  • observe the changes in your body and mind – how does the challenge affect your sleep, you mood and your productivity?
  • stay strong! In case you have cravings ask yourself if it’s really sugar what you need right now
  • keep in mind to also have fun with this little challenge, experiment with new recipes and if you want you can even try out some alternatives for refined sugar such as xylitol, dried fruit or coconut sugar.
