Braided Pesto Bread

Pesto love.

As you might have noticed I published a recipe for wild garlic pesto lately. A great idea besides adding pesto to a bowl of pasta is to make pesto bread out of it. And if you want it to look super beautiful and feel like demonstrating your creative skills you can do it like me and bake braided pesto bread! Of course every kind of pesto will do the job but in my opinion home made pesto always beats store-bought.

Try something new!

I’m usually not that kind of person who is very enthusiastic about bread but every now and then it happens that I almost eat a whole loaf all at once. Especially if it’s something extraordinary. And yes, exactly this happened this time. In my opinion it’s absolutely satisfying to snack on this bread without adding anything else. Furthermore, this bread is delicious to have it with a bowl of  mixed salads and it also makes a perfect bring-along gift when you’re invited to your next garden party.

  • 500 g whole grain spelt flour
  • 1 package dry yeast
  • 300 ml oat or rice milk
  • a pinch of salt and sugar
  • ca. 4 tbs pesto

Preparing the dough

Put all ingredients except from the pesto in a big bowl and knead either with your hands or a dough hook until well combined. Let the covered dough rise in a warm place for about one hour. If you also feel like having a little break just feel free to do so and place yourself right next to your dough. Haha.

Afterwards, place the dough on a baking sheet and roll it into a rectangle. Evenly spread the pesto, roll up the dough and cut it lengthwise. Now braid the two strands around each other. You can also make two smaller braids if you want it to be a little easier.

Don’t forget to preheat the oven to 175°C. Bake for about 30 minutes until golden.

Enjoy. And let me know if you also ate the whole braid all at once.
